Getting to Know You YXE

youtherapiesyxe

Welcome to the first blog post of 2025! We are your friendly neighbourhood therapists, Alana and Carissa from You Therapies YXE, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to embark on this journey with you. Our goal is to share openly about our experiences in the mental health field, share insights about our clinic, and delve into various topics that resonate with our lives and yours.

Getting to Know Us

Our Backgrounds

Let’s break the ice and share a bit about ourselves.

Alana: I hold a master’s degree in social work, which I pursued after completing my undergraduate studies at the University of Regina. My journey took an interesting turn when I completed my master’s online at the University of Waterloo during the pandemic. I initially worked in outreach counseling focusing on intimate partner violence, though my passion for trauma in general has expanded over the years to include post cancer individual and couples therapy, PTSD support, and first responders. I also have a focus on queer and neurodiverse adults.

Carissa: My career began in life and health coaching, which eventually led me to become a Kambo practitioner. I’ve always envisioned a clinic that combines Kambo with mental health practices, so I decided to pursue counseling and obtained my certification. I also serve as an associate addictions counselor, which allows me to support individuals in a variety of ways on their healing journeys.

Life Beyond Work

When we’re not in the clinic, what keeps us busy?

Alana: I’m a proud mom and step-mom of four lively kids, and my household is a whirlwind of activity with five ferrets and two cats! I love attending my kids’ sports and arts events, exploring nature through hiking, and engaging in creative pursuits like stained glass art.

Carissa: Dance is my passion! I particularly enjoy international ballroom and Latin dancing. As a mom of four and a proud grandmother, I have a soft spot for family time, and my dog Rocco keeps things lively at home. I’m also deeply connected to the arts scene, which fuels my creativity and inspiration in both my personal and professional life.

Why This Work?

Alana: My path to becoming a therapist began during a challenging period in my life when I met an incredible therapist who guided me back to myself. His support sparked my desire to provide that same kind of encouragement and understanding to others, helping them navigate their own struggles.

Carissa: I’m driven by a passion to give back to the community and assist others in discovering meaning in their lives. I believe that every life experience can be transformed into an opportunity for growth and support, and I want to model that for my children.

The Vision Behind You Therapies YXE

Alana: The name You Therapies YXE was inspired by Carissa. We envisioned a welcoming space where individuals could address trauma and explore alternative therapies like acupuncture and energy work. As queer women with ADHD, we understand firsthand the importance of meeting clients where they are in their journeys.

Carissa: The emphasis on ‘You’ in our name reflects our commitment to prioritizing each individual’s unique journey and personal growth.

What to Expect from the blog

Alana: Prepare for a diverse range of topics! We’ll dive into mental health, navigating life changes, exploring social issues, and even share some lighthearted pet stories. Our focus will be on joy, self-care, and the myriad experiences that shape our lives.

Carissa: This is about connection and sharing our stories. We’ve faced challenges similar to those you might encounter, and we’re here to create a meaningful space filled with insights, laughter, and perhaps some silly moments that resonate with everyone.

Final Thoughts

The moment we were dubbed the “dynamic duo” at a tradeshow felt like a sign that this journey was meant to be—like peanut butter and jelly! We invite you to join us as we explore the heart of mental health together!
